Free Firewall based on the GNU/Linux

A firewall is a part of a computer system or...network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting outward communication. It is also a device or set of devices configured to permit, deny, encrypt, decrypt, or proxy all computer traffic between different security domains based upon a set of rules and other criteria.

The Smoothwall Open Source Project is a free firewall based on the GNU/Linux operating system. It is ideal for installation on older computers that are no longer fast enough for day-to-day use but can still perform an important job of keeping a network safe.

The only thing that will probably be needed for the old computer is an extra network card. The download is an ISO image that should be copied to a blank CDR using software such as Active@ ISO Burner. It can then be used to boot the old computer and start the install process.

As this is designed for one purpose only, unlike other Linux distributions, it will wipe the hard disk so make sure all your files are off it first. Once installed it does not need to have a monitor, keyboard or mouse attached and can be controlled over the network.
