Big Brother 10: housemates announced

This year's Big Brother contestants are in for a shock - they will spend their first days living in one room with only cold porridge to eat. Big Brother 10 has kicked off with the usual assortment of fame-hungry housemates, including two glamour models, a Russian "rock star" and a former Young Conservative who lives in a stately home.

BB chiefs wanted to freshen up the show for its 10th series, so the eight men and eight women will walk through the door of the house tonight to find wooden crates and old metal oil drums instead of designer sofas.

The 16 will be given a series of tasks to complete to earn the right to become full housemates, with the failures being thrown out on Sunday.

They will spend the first few days sleeping on the floor of the living room and will have no access to a kitchen or bathroom.

The housemates and their Profiles:

RODRIGO LOPES, 23, a student from Brazil

Rodrigo is half-Italian, half-Brazilian and is studying in the UK. He does not want to go back to Brazil and says: "England is everything to me."

FREDERICK GEORGE FISHER, 23, an "entrepreneur" from Market Drayton, Shropshire

Oxford University graduate Freddie describes himself as "a polymath, a free spirit for whom 2009 is about blossoming".

CHARLIE DRUMMOND, 22, a customer service advisor from Newcastle

Charlie won the Newcastle heat of Mr Gay UK in 2007 and now works as a part-time model. The rest of the time he works in customer services for his local JobCentre..

KRIS DONNELLY, 24, a visual merchandiser from Shrewsbury

Another part-time model, Kris had "no job ambitions" and dropped out of university.

SIAVASH SABBAGHPOUR, 22, an events organiser from Iran

Siavash moved to the UK with his family and says he has never paid a rent bill in his life.

SREE DASARI, 25, a student from India

Sree lived in India until recently, when he came to England to study for a masters degree in business. He was recently elected student union president.

CAIRON AUSTIN-HILL, 18, a student from Florida

Cairon was born in London, moved to Florida aged one, then returned to live in London with his father two years ago.

MARCUS AKIN, 35, a window fitter from London

His ideal job would be a porn star. Currently, Marcus contents himself with fitting windows. His proudest moment was renovating the windows at Windsor Castle.

NOIRIN KELLY, 25, a retail manager from Dublin

A former All-Ireland athletics champion who describes herself as a "girly girl", Noirin believes education is the answer to everything.

BEINAZIR LASHARIE, 28, a study support assistant from London

Beinazir fled her native Pakistan aged one when her father, a supporter of Benazir Bhutto - after whom she was named - received death threats. The family sought asylum in the UK.

SOPHIE READE, 20, a glamour model from Cheshire

A topless model with 30GG breasts who once posed naked for Playboy, Sophie claims her parents are unaware of what she does for a living even though she lives with them.

ANGEL McKENZIE, 35, a professional boxer and artist from south London

Angel is an ex-rock star from Moscow whose music was once famous "all over Russia".

LISA WALLACE, 41, unemployed, from Birmingham

Lisa is a lesbian former factory worker who would love to "turn" Angelina Jolie. She came out to a teacher at school after being teased about her sexuality.

SOPHIA BROWN, 26, a private banking assistant from London.

Sophia is 4ft 11in and has suffered from lupus since she was young.

KARLY ASHWORTH, 21, unemployed, from Fife

A part-time glamour model and one of FHM's High Street Honeys, Karly loves to show off and says she is a "massive flirt".

Saffia is a single mother-of-two who will miss her children "immensely" while she is in the house.

BB chief:Ms Power said Big Brother had robust systems in place to look after the housemates' welfare, both during the 13 weeks the show is on air and after they leave the house.
