"The Hangover," a comedy that belches mightily and amusingly in the direction of all those rom-coms that seem underwritten by bridal magazines.I'll admit that even though I was highly anticipating The Hangover, I was also ready for disappointment. The trailer was simply too funny, and often times that means all the good jokes have been spent to lure you in.
Also, it's directed by Todd Phillips, who has a brutal track record of movies I either hated outright or liked once then learned to hate(Old School the chief culprit).
But what he and writers Jon Moore and Scott Lucas have managed to create is without a doubt the funniest, non-stop hilarious movie I've ever seen. And that includes my beloved Superbad and Top Secret.
Todd Phillips, the guy who gave you Will Ferrell running naked through "Old School," it's another comedy about male vulnerability -- which is code language for our inherent, magnificently pathetic stupidity.
What makes "Hangover" so funny is watching these hapless fools trying to piece together a lost night, forensic clue by forensic clue.
They are lost in a guy-centric universe of their own creation, where there are, essentially, two kinds of women: the humorless partners to whom they are betrothed and strippers with hearts of gold.
And their only way out of this nightmare is to return from the proverbial fire back to the frying pan: the noble institution of marriage. That's what you call a real punch line.
