Frank McCourt Death Photo : Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Angela’s Ashes”

Celebrated Author, Frank McCourt is dead at the age of 78.News of the death of Frank McCourt, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “Angela’s Ashes”. Frank McCourt has died from meningitis after being treated for melanoma.

In the mid-60s, McCourt penned “Angela’s Ashes,” an unwavering and haunting account of his family’s desolate circumstances in Limerick, Ireland, throughout the 30s and 40s.

Hitting it out of the ballpark with his first published book, back in 1996, it was highly praised and landed a spot on the New York Times bestseller list for 117 weeks.

McCourt had reportedly told the Hartford Courant about his inspiration:

“I certainly couldn’t have written ‘Angela’s Ashes’ when my mother was alive, because she would have been ashamed. Her generation and my generation, to a certain extent, were never proud of having grown up in poverty and adversity.

“We always wanted to give people the idea that we grew up in kind of middle-class, or lower-middle-class, circumstances.”

Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Frank McCourt will be greatly missed.
