Jim Johnson, Eagles’ defensive coordinator, who fought cancer, has died.after a long battle with skin cancer. Jim, who was 68 years old, worked for as defensive coordinator for 10 years under coach Andy Reid before being replaced by Sean McDermott just last week.
In more than 40 years of coaching, Johnson held head coaching duties only once (at the collegiate level), but was interviewed by the Arizona Cardinals regarding their head coaching vacancy in 2004.
“For ten years, Jim Johnson was an exceptional coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, but more importantly, he was an outstanding human being,” Eagles chairman Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement released by the team.
“Jim epitomized the traits of what a great coach should be — a teacher, a leader and a winner. He positively touched the lives of so many people in and out of the Eagles organization. It was easy to feel close to him. We will miss him greatly.”
The Eagles were second in the NFL in sacks between 2000 and 2008 under Johnson. While with the Eagles for a decade, Johnson worked in the NFL for 22 years. Ravens’ John Harbaugh, who previously worked under Johnson.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Jim Johnson will be greatly missed.
