Her apartment was hung with paintings and drawings by Pavel Tchelitchew, and also featured a bronze of the artist's hands folded in death. She collected and displayed a great number of playbills, posters and photographs in which she was the central figure.

Ruth went to New York in the 1930s and found work as a mode. In 1938, she joined Welles’ Mercury Theater group and made her Broadway debut the same year in Shoemaker’s Holiday. Ruth moved to Hollywood in 1941 and appeared in films like “Wilson”, “The Woman Who Came Back” and “Murder on the Waterfront”.

Last five years she had been cared for in her apartment by nurses. Her brother, Charles Henri, to whom she was devoted, died aged 89 in 2002, and she became reclusive, seldom seeing her daughter, who survives her, but talking to friends on the telephone. "It's easier this way," she said. "I don't bother to dress."
