Economists have slashed Indian economic growth forecasts for this year and the stock market is in the doldrums. But cellphone companies are signing millions of new subscribers a month, making India the fastest growing mobile-phone market in the world. There is no sign of a slowdown yet.
Intex Technologies and it is firm to modernize the rural India in a new way. Intex Technologies is going to present a unique cell phone handset to the rural India.
Intex Technologies highly equipped 13-year-old IT Hardware, Mobile Phones and Electronics company with its headquarter in New Delhi. The company has a pan-India presence though its own network of 2 mother-warehouses, 28 branches, 2 regional offices, 61 service centres, 111 service franchisees and 11 resident service engineers.
In addition, brand ‘Intex’ covers 6 business segments- Computer Peripherals, PC, GSM Mobile Phones, Consumer Electronics, Retail and Enterprise Business.
It has built for itself a high credibility amongst its vast network of channel partners and several million satisfied end users by offering value-for-money quality products supported by effective service and a consistent policy of transparent, fair and ethical dealings
Intex Technologies has already introduced the novel mobile handset- INTEX Hero for the rural consumers at a price of Rs. 2999/ and it is hoped that more and more Indians will start using it shortly.
What is the uniqueness then? There is the presence of 45 days stand-by battery life in the phone and this enables people to talk freely, even if there is any scarcity of power.
In addition, the presence of FM radio, camera, expandable memory, MP3 audio player and 1000 contacts phonebook memory make the cell phone more decorous.
Rural customers "have been hungry for mobile phones for a long time, so demand will remain unaffected," by the global jitters, said S.P. Shukla, chief executive officer of the mobile business at Reliance Communications India Ltd., India's second-largest cellular company by number of subscribers, after Bharti Airtel.
Reliance launched a new $2 billion nationwide network in January that reaches more than 24,000 towns and 600,000 villages.
International wireless giants are clamoring for a piece of the action. Last year, Vodafone Holdings PLC took over India's fourth-largest cellular company by number of subscribers. In December, Japan's NTT Docomo Inc. announced it will pay almost $3 billion for a 26% stake in Tata Teleservices Ltd.
Bolt Browser Hit the top-operaMini on trouble
Bolt is written in Java ME like Opera Mini and according to Bitstream can run on "nearly all" Java based handsets that support MIDP 2 and CLDC 1.0. The only handsets Bitstream specifically says Bolt will not run on are ones using the Palm OS. Blackberries and "selected" Windows Mobile handsets are specifically mentioned as supported.
Since Bolt browser made its debut at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona in February, it has been on a promotion spree. The efforts, it seems, have paid off well for BitStream, the developers of Bolt.
The fact that Bolt has more active users in India than in any other country outside North America, comes as a surprise to the folks at BitStream. One in six of Bolt's active users reside in India-- just four months after the initial launch of the browser.
Bolt has a good set of well chosen one click shortcut keys for page up/down, column left/right, bookmarking the current page, entering a new URL, switching to the bookmarks or history pages and opening the built in RSS reader.
BitStream added that Indian users have visited more than 5 million web pages and consumed more than 1 terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) of bandwidth using the mobile browser since it debuted.
Bolt Browser claims to be much faster than its competitors and is web-kit based. Like Opera Mini, it too has a compression mechanism that enables users to save on data transmission costs. Learn more about the browser here.
Featurewise Bolt is fairly basic. Like Opera Mini. tabbed browsing and copying text from web pages aren't suported (UCWEB can do both). Pages can't be saved although images in pages can be "downloaded".
Dowloading of both images and files launches the phone's built in browser. Unlike Opera Mini, Bolt on the N95 and 7100i does not close when it launches the phone browser, a big plus because it means you don't lose your place on the page.

Sims with more personality quirks
The Sims 3, Electronic Arts and Maxis' popular life-simulating game for the PC and Mac."'The Sims 3' is a huge step forward for us," said Executive producer Ben Bell. "You can create incredibly detailed people who have real personalities that you get to design using a feature we call personality traits. By combining words, you can create a new kind of a person that has totally different desires in life and then you get to go fulfill their destiny in the game."
The simulation game or simply game is simulation or reenactment various activities or "real life" in the form of a game for various purposes: training, analysis, or prediction.Well-known examples are war games, business games, and roleplay simulation.
Such activities originate in the human prehistory of games deduced by anthropology from observing primitive cultures, where children's games in a significant degree mimic activities of adults: hunting, warring, nursing, etc.
Unlike previous editions in the series, every character will live their lives simultaneously in the fictional town of Sunset Valley.
Bell said "The Sims 3," available June 3, will also feature a moviemaking tool and more options for players to customize their Sims' homes, furnishings and clothes. Gamers can even turn their Sims into kleptomaniacs.
"A Sim who has this trait is going to have wishes in life to steal things from other people," said Bell. "They also have the ability to sneak into a friend's house, walk into a room where nobody happens to be hanging out and maybe swipe something. One of the fun things I've seen people on the team do is build up a whole household of stolen things."
In perhaps a case of life imitating art, a pirated copy of "The Sims 3" has already been leaked on several file-sharing Web sites two weeks before the game's launch.
The comparisons of the merits of simulation games versus other teaching techniques have been carried out by many researchers and a number of comprehensive reviews have been published.

Indonesian Facebook in Crisis- but no flirting!
One of the major muslim population country now comes under the Technology gossip, Muslim clerics debating the exploding popularity of Facebook in Indonesia said Friday that followers could use the networking site to connect with friends or for work but not to gossip or flirt.
Above 700 clerics, or imams, agreed to draft up guidelines on surfing the Web after receiving complaints about Facebook and other sites, including concerns they encourage illigal sex, said Nabil Haroen, a spokesman for the organizers.
They decided "Facebook is forbidden if it is used for gossiping and spreading lies," he said, and that users also could not ask overtly intimate questions or in anyway encourage "vulgar behavior."
But the clerics noted, too, there were many upsides to Facebook and other trendy, new forms of communication, from mobile phone text messaging to video conferencing.
The head of an influential Muslim religious council says he favors a ban on Facebook because of possible sexual content. He says it can drive people to "distasteful pornographic chatting."
The same council recently issued rulings against smoking and yoga.
Most devout Muslims adhere to the council's rulings because ignoring a fatwa, or religious decree, is considered a sin.

Monsoon showers reaches Andaman sea-weather
Annual monsoon rains, vital for India's farm-dependent economy, on Thursday reached the Andaman Sea and adjoining southern Bay of Bengal, two senior officials of the state-run India Meteorological Department told Reuters.
It was pre-monsoon rainfall. After this drizzle, the maximum temperature is likely to fall a bit," an official at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The city had witnessed an increase in the maximum temperature on Tuesday at 38.4 degrees Celsius. On Monday, the maximum temperature was 37.6 degrees Celsius.
"Monsoon has set in over the Andaman Sea," said one of the officials, who did not want to be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
Another official said this had brightened the prospects of an early arrival of monsoon rains over the Kerala coast.
Last week, the weather office had forecast the June-September monsoon rains would hit the southern Indian coast on May 26, ahead of the normal arrival date of June 1.
As per the normal time-table, the monsoon reaches the Andaman on May 20 and Kerala in around another 10 days. Even if the monsoon reaches Andaman late, it can reach Kerala early.
"Right now we are expecting the same situation. If the monsoon does not reach the Andaman on May 20, then we can say that it is slightly late. But, still it is likely to reach Kerala before time. The journey of monsoon between Andaman to Kerala is expected to be completed in around seven days,"

Indonesian military transport plane crashed
An Indonesian military transport plane crashed into a residential area in East Java early Wednesday, killing 97 people, Television footage showed the burning wreckage of the Hercules scattered in rice paddies in Magetan, East Java, about 160 kilometres (100 miles) east of Yogyakarta.
"The death toll is now 97 people and 15 injured," spokesman Bambang Sulistio told AFP.The plane was carrying 98 passengers including soldiers and their families, among them 10 children, on a flight to the eastern province of Papua, military spokesman Sagom Tamboen said earlier.
Soldiers search for victims at the plane's crash site in East Java Wednesday.
1 of 3 The death toll might rise, because the Air Force said 112 people were thought to be aboard when the Hercules transport plane crashed about 6:30 a.m.
The crash destroyed four homes and killed two people who lived in at least one of the homes, said Suwardi, the village leader of Karas in East Java.
The plane had a crew of 14 people and was carrying an additional 98 passengers, Major Gen. Suwarno said.
At least 15 people from the flight had been rescued, according to Bambang Sulistyo, an Indonesian air force spokesman. Watch what happened to the plane »
Wahyu Nuryanto, a staff member at the Iswahyudi hospital in nearby Madiun, told local media that 19 people were brought to the hospital -- several with serious injuries, including multiple fractures.
The 19 included air force personnel, family members of air force personnel, and civilians, Nuryanto said.
Rescue crews Wednesday were evacuating the crash area where local media showed plumes of smoke billowing from a rice field and rescuers scrambling to move victims on makeshift stretchers.
The crash comes a day after another Indonesian Hercules transport plane crashed on a runway after touching down early. No one was killed in that crash in Papua province.
It is the second accident involving an Indonesian Air Force Hercules in two weeks, after one overshot the runway of Wamena airport in Papua on May 10. One person was reportedly injured in that incident.
In response to the Wamena accident, the air force said it would check its ageing Hercules fleet which is being upgraded with airframe and engine capability improvements.
Early last month, 24 military personnel died when their Fokker 27 training aircraft careered into a hangar and burst into flames at an air base in West Java.
Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic nation and relies heavily on air travel, but accidents are common and its commercial airlines are banned from flying in European Union airspace for safety reasons.

Prabhakaran 'alive and safe' Tigers claim??????
Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels today denied the Government’s claims that their leader Velupillai Prabhakaran had been killed by the military yesterday.
"Our beloved leader is alive and safe. He will continue to lead the quest for dignity and freedom for the Tamil people," the Tigers' chief of international relations, Selvarasa Pathmanathan, said in a statement carried on the pro-rebel Tamilnet website.
Mr Pathmanathan gave no indication of the whereabouts of Prabhakaran, who was the prime architect of a 26-year war that claimed at least 70,000 lives.
Military officials said yesterday that Velupillai Prabhakaran had been killed after he was ambushed by Army commandos as he made a desperate attempt to break through Government lines in an ambulance.
Prabhakaran, who had sworn never to be taken alive, was badly burnt when his vehicle burst into flames, officials said. No pictures were released of his body and DNA tests were ordered to prove his identity.
The Tigers' claims came as the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse announced the "complete defeat" of the rebels and vowed to press ahead with a "homegrown political solution" to end ethnic divisions between the majority Sinhalese population and the minority Tamils.
Addressing Parliament, Mr Rajapakse said the government now controlled “every inch” of the island state and had rid the island nation of “terrorism” after crushing the rebels on Monday
TAMIL NETWhile rejecting Colombo's claim of the killing of LTTE leader V. Pirapaharan and assuring his safety and well-being, LTTE's International Relations Head S. Pathmanathan Tuesday accused Colombo of treachery in the killing of the political wing leaders B. Nadesan and S. Puleedevan. Mr. Pathmanathan said it is a crime against humanity that needs to be investigated. Meanwhile, informed sources told TamilNet that what happened in the early hours of Monday was a well-planned massacre of several unarmed civil officers of the LTTE with the aim of annihilating its political structure.
southern Philippine landslide Rescuers find more bodies
After the tragedy Rescuers found more bodies under tonnes of mud and debris after rain-induced landslides hit a mining village in the southern Philippines, increasing the death toll to 17, local government officials said.
Soldiers, police officers and miners, using shovels and heavy equipment, were still searching for 15 more people buried under tonnes of loosened soil near Pantukan town on the southern island of Mindanao, Arturo Uy, governor of Compostela Valley province, told Reuters by phone.
Hours after the landslide on Monday, rescuers dug up 10 bodies and 30 people were pulled out alive, Uy said. Seven bodies were found early on Tuesday.
Local police, however, reported a higher toll at 26 dead.
"Our rescue teams are taking advantage of the good weather today to recover all the bodies," Uy said, adding military and civilian engineers were clearing the roads to the disaster area to speed up search operations."We finally saw the sun today. We hope to complete the search and recovery operations and abandon the mining village to prevent further loss of lives and property."
Uy said 17 of 30 miners pulled out from the rubble on Monday were treated in hospitals. The others suffered minor injuries and contusions after two days of rains triggered landslides and buried a community of 200 small-scale miners near Pantukan town.
Last month, the local government ordered the suspension of small-scale mining operations in the area due to bad weather conditions, but some miners ignored the order and continued working.
Governor Arturo Uy said nine bodies were dug up overnight by local miners and volunteers who rushed to the area after the landslide on Monday.
Six fatalities were found immediately after the accident, which occurred after days of continuous heavy rains.
Uy said Philippine air force helicopters were used to fly in rescuers into the area and extricate the recovered bodies.
'The area is almost inaccessible even to motorcycles,' he said. 'This is hampering the rescue efforts.'
Hundreds of people have been killed in gold-mining areas in Compostela Valley due to accidents, as well as violence among rival small-scale mining corporations and big-time operators.

LTTE chief Prabhakaran shot dead in Srilanka
A Sri Lankan military spokesman said that there has been no identification of Prabhakaran as yet.
There were reports that only DNA verification would confirm Prabhakaran's death, as he was known to move around with two doubles.
Earlier in the day, the Sri Lankan Army had claimed that Prabhakaran was alive and surrounded by government troops.
On Sunday, four senior rebel leaders were killed in fighting, the army said.
They included the head of the Tigers" political wing, Balasingham Nadesan, the head of rebels" peace secretariat Seevaratnam Puleedevan, and a military leader known as Ramesh.
The latest claims cannot be verified as reporters are barred from the war zone.
If confirmed, Prabhakaran's death could signal the end of the nearly three decade-long civil-ethnic war that cost the island nation the lives of thousands of innocent civilians.
Meanwhile, injured civilians continue to leave Sri Lanka"s war zone to get medical care.
The movement of civilians out of the war zone comes as the LTTE conceded defeat after sending out suicide attackers as part of a last-ditch attempt to keep the military"s final assault at bay on the square kilometre they control.
"This battle has reached its bitter end. We have decided to silence our guns," the LTTE"s diplomatic chief, Selvarajah Pathmanathan, said in a statement posted on the pro-rebel web site www.TamilNet.com on Sunday
A day before, Sri Lanka"s President Mahinda Rajapaksa had declared victory after troops seized the entire coast for the first time since the war erupted in 1983.

Oprah Winfrey apologized to author James Frey
Oprah Winfrey has apologized to author James Frey for shaming him on her TV chat show amid revelations he had fabricated parts of his memoir, her spokeswoman said on Wednesday.Winfrey's apology was first reported on the Web site of Vanity Fair, with the author saying he felt "grateful" for Winfrey's gesture. The two have a tumultuous history.
Winfrey had been one of Frey's most vocal boosters, naming his 2003 drugs-and-alcohol memoir "A Million Little Pieces" one of her "book club" choices in 2005 and propelling it to bestseller status.
But the next year, after it was revealed Frey had invented some details in the supposedly non-fiction memoir and written that he once spent three months behind bars when in reality it was a few hours, Winfrey lambasted him as a guest on her show.
"It is difficult for me to talk to you, because I really feel duped," Winfrey said on the 2006 broadcast.
She went on to accuse the author of betraying his readers. Her berating of Frey was among the most public embarrassments for the author, who apologized for "lying." A month after the broadcast his publisher Riverhead Books dropped him.
But Winfrey and Frey appear to have reconciled.
Frey said Winfrey called him last fall to tell him "I felt I owe you an apology," and she explained that her lambasting of him sprang from her sense of feeling betrayed, according to the Vanity Fair report.
"It was a nice surprise to hear from her, and I really appreciated the call and the sentiment," he told Vanity Fair.
Angela DePaul, a spokeswoman for Winfrey confirmed that the chat show host had called to apologize.
There are no immediate plans to bring Frey on the show for another episode, because the program has stopped taping new episodes for the season.
Frey's latest book "Bright Shiny Morning," a work of fiction, came out last year from HarperCollins to mixed reviews and was reissued on paperback this month.

Ashton Kutcher claimed victory in his Twitter-off with CNN
When Ashton Kutcher beat CNN in Twitter followers, he promiesed to “Ding Dong ditch” Ted Turner and the cable channel. It turns out that Ashton meant piling up boxes of Ding Dongs out side of Ted’s Montana Grill restaurant in Atlanta near the CNN building.
He had help from Twitter followers and wife Demi Moore. He later Tweeted that he was “happy to know homeless people took all the Ding Dongs.”
After days of trash talk, Ashton Kutcher claimed victory in his Twitter-off with CNN early Friday morning (April 17), as the actor became the first person to hit the magic 1 million-followers mark on the micro-blogging site at.
Kutcher had challenged the news network to a virtual duel earlier in the week to see who could reach the million mark, and CNN put up a valiant fight, crossing the finish line around 30 minutes after Kutcher, according to a report on the CNN Web site. With a simple post —Kutcher announced the end of the race on his Twitter site, which was followed by a video of a champagne-soaked celebration, hosted by a fedora-wearing Kutcher.
Moore and a group of friends who had gathered to watch as the last few followers pushed him over the edge. CNN had gone live with the race as well, with Anderson Cooper urging viewers to help the network beat Kutcher.
What was at stake in the great Twitter dash? Kutcher promised to donate 10,000 mosquito bed nets to charity for World Malaria Day (April 25) if he won the contest and 1,000 if he lost, with CNN pledging the same prize. Kutcher displayed a check for $100,000 to the Malaria No More Fund just moments before the blessed event.
"We are over a million. CNN is still trying to get there. And that is just how it goes," Kutcher said as he toasted the victory and screamed, while step-daughters Scout and Tallulah looked on in what appeared to be their jammies. "There are a million people that need to be thanked for this."

T-Mobile May Force Smartphones Users Into Choosing Data Plans
We all know that there are not too many smartphone users who do not use some sort of data plan or the other. But, the few T-Mobile smartphone customers who are still not making full use of their smartphone are going to find it uncomfortable.
According to some sources, T-Mobile may stipulate that all new smatphones have accompanying data plans, starting as early as June.
The new smartphone data plan requirement apparently will not apply to the BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Pearl Flip, Samsung Behold or Samsung Memoir. It is not clear if customers will be forced into choosing an unlimited data plan or if they will be given a choice of lower-rate data plans with lower data allowances.
Well, let us take this in a positive light - sure, it might be more expensive, but then again, so is the smartphone itself. Right? Tell us what you think.

Yahoo Search Engine Optimization is next level
Google own lot of the search space traffic these days, but Yahoo little bit slower but it still sees a lot of respectable amount of traffic. Unlike Google, Yahoo is a content producer as well as a search engine; additionally, yahoo didn't start out as an algorithm-based search engine.
Today the fact how? And what does that mean for you if you're trying to get your site viewed by Yahoo users? Keep reading for the answers.According to Comscore stats, Yahoo holds around 20% of the search engine market share. yahoo's Friend Compete.com also supports this, giving Yahoo 19.4%.
latest Hitwise awards Yahoo 22.55%, so it's safe to say Yahoo holds around 20% of the search engine market share in the United States. That number differs for UK, Canada and other countries.Yahoo Inc originally started in 1994 as a web directory by Jerry Yang and David Filo.
Its original URL resided on akebono.stanford.edu/yahoo, and the name Yahoo translated to "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle." After keeping up Yahoo for a bit, the founders saw business potential and attracted $3 million in investments. On March 8, 1997, Yahoo acquired Rocketmail, which became Yahoo Mail.
Yahoo outsourced search to Google for four years. The partnership started on June 26,2000, and ended in February 2004. It ended after Yahoo and Microsoft realized the importance of search as a standalone business.
Yahoo purchased Overture for $1.6 and the Inktomi search engine for $280 million. Yahoo renamed Overture to Yahoo Search Marketing, and Inktomi, along with other search technologies, were combined into Yahoo Search.
The move ended Google's near-monopoly in search.in the past yahoo search engine optimization Yahoo decides that they had had enough of Google subservience for their search results, finally pulling the plug on their alliance with Google for search technology, and aligning instead with Inktomi.
Not only does this herald the advent of yet another eminent contender to defy Google’s dominion in the search market--Yahoo makes quite a significant chunk of the online traffic coming to a website--but it also sets the stage for a battle to be waged in SEO, with all sights now set on Yahoo.
Online classified website Craigslist and "erotic services"
Craigslist is a centralized network of online communities, featuring free online classified advertisements with sections devoted to jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, gigs, résumés, and discussion forums.
Online classified website Craigslist having a problem with his "erotic services" ads so its replace with a new adult category because pressure by state authorities after the murder of a (advertiser)masseuse who advertised on the site.
The "erotic services" phase will end within seven days and will be replaced by an "adult services" category here advertisements will be screened by Craigslist staff, Craigslist said in a statement.
The measures could set a precedent for similar content producing websites, said Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who led a 40-state task-force on Craigslist and campaigned publicly for tighter controls on the San Francisco-based service.
"Closing the erotic services section, a blatant Internet brothel, should lead to other blocking and screening measures, and set a model for other sites, if Craigslist keeps its word," he said.
Craigslist's sex-service listings have faced intense scrutiny since the April 14 murder of the advertiser 25-year-old masseuse Julissa Brisman, who advertised on Craigslist in Boston.
Philip Markoff, a 23-year-old Boston University medical student, was charged with killing Brisman and with attacks on two other women he met through Craigslist ads.
The past also not good for craigslist, its comes under critisism.
In January 2006, the San Francisco Bay Guardian published an editorial criticizing Craigslist for moving into local communities and "threatening to eviscerate" local alternative newspapers.
Craigslist has been compared to Wal-Mart, a multinational corporation that some feel crushes small local businesses when they move into towns and offer a huge assortment of goods at cheaper prices.
In August 2007, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin wrote a letter to Craigslist asking the company to take steps to avoid unwittingly enabling child prostitution through its classified ads.

Android growing at More than 900 percent and more
Strategy Analytics report, "Global Smartphone Vendor Market Share by Region: 2008," Android will outpace the growth of the fast-growing Apple iPhone and RIM BlackBerry this year, writes Michelle Maisto in eWEEK.
While sales of phones running the Android stack will grow at a 900 percent rate, the iPhone OS will grow at 79 percent in 2009, says the story.
"The study pegs global smartphone shipments at 152 million units worldwide in 2008, representing over 20 percent growth annually in a year marked by a major recession.
Asia Pacific continues its position as the largest market for smartphones, followed by North America and Western Europe, says the study.
Tom Kang, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics (Milton Keynes, England and Boston, MA), said: 'The Android mobile operating system from Google gained early traction in the U.S. in the second half of 2008 and it is gradually spreading its presence into Europe and Asia during 2009.
Android is expanding from a low base and it is consequently outgrowing the iPhone OS from Apple, which we estimate will grow at a relatively lower 79 percent annually in 2009."
Neil Mawston, Director at Strategy Analytics, added: "A relatively low-cost licensing model, its semi-open-source structure and Google's support for cloud services have encouraged companies such as HTC, Motorola, Samsung, T Mobile, Vodafone and others to support the Android operating system. Android is now in a good position to become a top-tier player in smartphones over the next two to three years."
FeedDemon 3.0.0.20 beta
FeedDemon 3.0.0.20 beta 5a continues to build out the feature set of the popular RSS and Atom feed manager. FeedDemon 3 is shaping up to be a must-grab improvement on the last stable release, version 2.7.
FeedDemon 3 is able to synchronize feeds not only with FeedDemon's own Web site, NewsGator, for online news reading, but it can also talk to Google Reader.
I jumped away from Google Reader because at the time it was sluggish and I wanted to get my podcasts out of my music jukebox, but I've always regretted losing the convenience of having my e-mail and my RSS reader online and smoothly talking to one another.
Google Reader integration means that users will have more flexibility in how they use the program and should broaden its appeal. Beta 5 synchronizes Google Reader and FeedDemon tags as well as the feeds themselves.

Singapore to spend US$1.2B on infocomm projects
SINGAPORE City Developments Ltd (CDL) executive chairman Kwek Leng Beng yesterday acknowledged that there have been some cases of high-end property buyers resorting to panicselling in the secondary market.
These are people who’d bought their units during the early stages of the property boom ‘It is not as alarming as what some people think. Just bear in mind, because of a couple of transactions, these few swallows do not make a summer,’ he told analysts and journalists at a briefing to announce CDL’s second quarter results.
Ronnie Tay, CEO of Singapore's Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), said FY 2009, which started in April, will see the government calling more than 392 new infocomm projects.government invested S$1.6 billion (US$1.1 billion) in 621 infocomm tenders in FY2008, which included the network company (NetCo) for the country's planned next-generation national broadband network (NBN), said Tay.
Financial year, an estimated 40 percent of the tenders will be worth more than S$500,000 (US$342,350) each, he added. These include big projects like the Ministry of Education's (MOE's) Standard ICT Operating Environment (SOE) for schools project.
This is a separate system from the IDA's 8-year SOEasy project awarded last year, which will be implemented across 74 government agencies.
Government CIO, IDA, said the remaining 60 percent of the tenders valued at less than S$500,000 (US$342,350) are of smaller scope, and will give SMBs (small and midsize businesses) the opportunity to apply for them.
Kang said the government has for the past four years awarded two-thirds of its infocomm contracts to local companies, with multi-national corporations winning the rest.
Tay said at a media briefing later, there is no preference shown to local companies, but remarked this trend "could be the local companies growing in capability".

Mobile operators new revenue streams
Recent economic conditions mean these issues will only become more acute, as operators look to cut costs and the pressure to grow the business becomes increasingly intense.
A key aspect for operators addressing these challenges is the modern application of customer relationship management (CRM) principles.
Two of the main drivers behind CRM are, of course, to keep customers from going elsewhere and to move them up the value chain. These are both a challenge in the evolving economic climate.
In terms of subscribers moving to other operators, ie. churning, the point of upgrade has traditionally represented a natural opportunity to switch between operators but as cash conscious-consumers often hang onto their phones for longer, the upgrade cycle may be extended.

Ubuntu Upstart unpacked
Downloaded and unpacked upstart, you will need to configure the source tree, build and install it. The main question here is deciding whether or not you want to take the plunge and replace sysvinit immediately, or whether you want to test first.
The brave will want to configure the source such that the executable parts are placed on the root filesystem and the data partsare in the usual places.
This led to an eventual rewrite of initialization scripts and the use of runit instead of the traditional SysV init. The results were fantastic: a fast booting system with services starting in parallel and a series of scripts to start and stop the system with a small footprint and amazing speed.
When I recently installed Fedora Core 10, I found that one of the new features was the use of Ubuntu"s Upstart, a SysV init replacement system.
I've taken the opportunity to poke at it a little bit and see how it compares to runit and SysV init, especially in light of the fact that a number of features it does have or plans to have mimic a lot of the things that made runit and supervised services so appealing.
According to Canonical, Upstart is an event-based replacement for SysV init, that handles the starting of tasks and services during boot.
It stops them during shutdown, and supervises them while the system is running. From an end-user perspective, the system boots no differently.
IT spending in Malaysia negative forecast for 2009
Manufacturing IT spending in Malaysia could turn around by 2010, according to IDC analyst firm Manufacturing Insights.Manufacturing Insights Asia Pacific associate research director, Debashis Tarafdar
...said that while Southeast Asia (SEA) would be cautious about IT investments in 2009, due to the current economic turmoil, renewed interest in IT investments could come sometime in 2010 with signs of global economic recovery and growth in exports.
Despite the negative forecast for 2009, the research firm expects to see initial signs of recovery on IT spending in Malaysia as early as 2010, with investments rebounding to its pre-crisis level by 2011.
Basing its assumptions on first-quarter-2009 research results of various IT spending segments, current economic indicators, historical trends and assumptions, IDC foresees 2009 IT spending growth to be at -1.8 percent. However, IDC said if the economy does not pick up by the third quarter of this year, IT spending growth for 2009 could fall to -3 percent.
However, IDC said "bright spots" that still exist in various sub-sectors will cushion the overall IT investment in Malaysia although the major contributors--the consumer and manufacturing sectors--are likely to remain cautious in spending.
Maggie Tan, associate research director of IDC South East Asia, said in a statement: "Depending on the levels of fiscal improvements seen in the economy, how the [government's] overall stimulus package 'kicks-in', as well as the Southeast Asian regional efforts to combat the current world downturn, IDC sees Malaysia riding out this crisis with signs of an upswing in IT investments within 12 to 18 months."
“The analysis also highlights that compounded annual growth rate in Malaysia is likely to be moderate at 4.3 per cent in 2008-2012,” said Tarafdar. “In 2009, across the SEA region, we expect manufacturing companies to shrink hardware budgets significantly, and channel that money towards software and services.
This is in line with the drive to maximise the lifespan of available hardware, which cannot be done without prudent investments in IT services, and to some extent, on software.”
“Similarly, manufacturers in Malaysia are expected to increase spending on IT services in 2009 to gain greater leverage on existing assets and infrastructure,” he said.” Overall, IT services spending in the manufacturing industry will expand by about 7.7 per cent over 2008. This strategy should see them through the current economic crisis."
Tarafdar added that for the Malaysian manufacturing sector, the study indicated that in the short term, manufacturers would be tightening their belts in terms of IT spending, particularly in hardware investments. “As a result, total manufacturing IT spending in 2009 total will drop slightly by 0.8 per cent over 2008.”
“However, IT spending will pick up steam from 2010 after a cautious 2009, with a 5.6 per cent year-on-year growth,” he said.
“In addition, process manufacturing industries such as chemicals, metals and pulp/paper will perform better in the short term compared to discrete manufacturing industries such as automotive, electronics and industrial products.”
