bloom box bloom energy and bloom energy fuel cell

K.R. Sridhar’s new fuel-cell miracle, Bloom-box provides clean, inexpensive energy right at your backyard.Bloom Energy has actually been operating for 8 years, raising $400 million in funding from VCs including Kleiner Perkins (investors in Netscape, Amazon, Google (Google) and others). Its “Bloom Box” houses fuel cells that run on oxygen plus natural gas, landfill gas, bio-gas or even solar.

It is hoped one day this technology will altogether replace large power plants and transmission line grids by localizing energy production for better efficiency. The company’s first customer was Google, which has been powering a datacenter on 4 Bloom Boxes for 18 months.

Google’s boxes run on natural gas. eBay is also a customer — the company has 5 Bloom Boxes in San Jose, which it says have saved $100,000 in energy costs over 9 months.

The Bloom Box is basically a thin ceramic plate that can be stacked on top of other similar plates. The energy transmission is wireless but this module can also be connected to an electric grid.

Sridhar, an Indian born Ph.D. used to work for NASA to develop technologies to sustain life on Mars. His company, Bloom has been working for a decade to produce the Bloom Box which will soon be ready for commercial sale.
