A huge blaze in Ashworth Drive and Ocean Boulevard at Hampton Beach burnt down a chain of buildings on Friday at around 12:00 am. A fire that started in an unoccupied oceanfront hotel was fanned by winds of near hurricane force and spread to adjacent buildings, engulfing and destroying an entire block of businesses, firefighters said. No injuries were reported.

The blaze had already engulfed a long chain of houses by the time it was 2:00 am. Surf Motel, Happy Hampton Arcade and Mrs. Mitchells, a gift shop were few of the victims. The fire was so immense that fire departments from as far as Massachusetts and Maine were called in for assistance.

Most of the businesses in the area, including the Surf Hotel, are only open in the summer. No one was in any of the buildings that burned.Hampton Fire Chief Chris Silver said the fire is believed to have started on the first floor of the Surf Hotel. The cause has not been determined.

He said the prompt response of 40 fire crews, some coming from Maine and Massachusetts, helped keep the fire from spreading. The fire fighters were able to restrict the fire from spreading further but had a hard time putting it under leash. By the time the flames went dim, most of the houses on fire were turned into ashes. The actual cause of the fire is still not known.
