John Patrick "Jack" Murtha, Jr. was an American politician from the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. Murtha, a Democrat, represented Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1974 until his death in 2010.Murtha was hospitalized for an infection caused by an accidental cut to the intestine during gall bladder surgery.
He died a week later on the afternoon of February 8, 2010, in the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia.His death increases the chances that the Obama administration could succeed in killing two weapons programs that Murtha helped Congress to resurrect last year -the Boeing C-17 transport plane and a second engine for the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter.
The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi who was also a close friend of Murtha's, said in a statement on the day of the congressman's death that "with the passing of John Murtha, America has lost a great patriot".
House Minority Leader, Republican John Boehner said that "our nation has lost a decorated veteran."A Facebook group of with one of the largest collection of condolences was set up and obtained over 1500 members in just a few hours.
