rochette South Korean Kim Yu-Na

Canada's Joannie Rochette, who showed tremendous courage to compete just two days after her mother died, is third.The 24-year-old from Quebec, whose mother passed away after suffering a heart attack shortly after arriving in Vancouver, was given a standing ovation from the crowd after her solid performance, which earned her a season's best 71.36 points.

Joannie Rochette is a Canadian figure skater. She is the 2009 World silver medalist, the 2008 and 2009 Four Continents silver medalist, the 2004 Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, and a six-time (2005-2010) Canadian national champion. As of January 2010, she was ranked 5th in the world.At the 2010 Canadian Figure Skating Championships, she was nominated to represent Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Rochette was born in Montréal, Québec, and raised in Île Dupas. On February 21, 2010, two days before the beginning of the ladies event at the 2010 Winter Olympics, her mother, Thérèse Rochette, died of a heart attack while in Vancouver. Despite the loss she continued in her commitment to compete.In the Olympic short program, Rochette recorded a personal best of 71.36, the third highest score of the night.

South Korean Kim Yu-Na lived up to her tag of favourite to set a new world's best and lead the women's figure skating after the short programme.The reigning world champion, 19, nailed all her jumps, opening with a triple lutz/triple toeloop combination and landing a triple flip and double axel.Kim scored 78.50 to open a 4.74-point lead on Mao Asada of Japan.
