tsunami japan 10cm tsunami hits Japan

The first wave of the tsunami triggered by the powerful earthquake in Chile hit Japan's outlying islands at around 12:48 a.m. local time, (0348 GMT) Sunday, but the initial waves were just 10 cm high. A tiny tsunami has hit a small island far south of Tokyo after authorities warned that waves of more than 3 metres could batter Japan's Pacific coast following a huge earthquake in Chile.

The waves first hit Ogasawara islands off Japan's main island. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) predicted it will soon reach other parts of the Pacific coastline of the country.

A 10 cm tsunami lapped the small island of Minamitori 1950 km south of Tokyo, NHK public TV reported.Local governments had urged thousands of households in northeast Japan to evacuate, where the waves are expected to be more than 3 meters high. Japan
Meteorological agency issued the tsunami warning for a wide swathe of Japan's Pacific coast.Transportation on many lines of the railway system has also been suspended due to the tsunami.

Police cars and fire trucks patrolled coastal roads and fishing boats, seeking to avoid any tsunami, headed out to sea under gray skies, with snow flurries in some areas."The waves could climb up the land, so for real safety you should evacuate to a place several times higher than the predicted height of the waves," JMA official Yasuo Sekita told a news conference.
