To add to the report, Heart disease is the number one killer of women. More than 450,000 women die each year consequently and many are ignorant of the risk factors, many of which can be controlled or prevented.
In Southwest Florida, about 75 businesses are promoting Wear Red Day, said Regan Goldberg, vice president of field operations for the heart association in Collier and Lee counties.
Heart disease is the leading killer among women, yet millions of women remain at risk, and increasingly at a younger age, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Heath in Bethesda, MD.
Eighty percent of women at mid-life, aged 40 to 60, still have one or more risk factors that can be modified to reduce their risk of heart disease later in life, according to the heart and lung institute. In addition, 60 percent of women aged 20 to 39 have one or more risk factors.
Among the top risk factors are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, diabetes and smoking.
