A loud clamor of applause could be heard from the hundreds of onlookers who gathered downtown to watch the third-largest implosion in the United States.Advanced Explosive Demolition used two thousand sticks of dynamite to implode 1515 Tower on South Flagler Drive at 9:06 a.m. making it the third tallest building ever to be imploded in the U.S.
The demolition of the building, which was built in 1974, was tricky because of it's proximity to other buildings in the area. Last year, the original company hired to take it down wasn't able to secure $50 million in insurance required to protect neighboring condos.
Residents in nearby areas were asked to turn off and seal their air conditioners to keep out the dust plume from the implosion.
The implosion was delayed briefly after police discovered a man hiding in a stairwell at the Norton Park Place Condos at 1501 S. Flagler Dr. The individual was taken into custody without incident.
